Artist Biography

In her finely rendered works on paper, Mary Snowden often begins with newspaper photographs or events that she observes on the streets. She juxtaposes these images with others found in the comics, history and old children's books, as if figures and places from other times have access to enter and interact with the present.

Deeply engaged in current events, in life and in her art, Snowden, in the early nineties focused on the role of women in the 1940's and 1950's. This examination led her into a critique of our current culture, addressing issues from positive and negative perspectives.

"Orphan Annie has become my muse," says Snowden. "She is an independent and resourceful female from the past. Annie was street savvy with an acute social conscience. I imagine that she would have many opinions concerning our present culture."

Mary Snowden received a SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is the Chairperson of Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts.
