Life Frames, A Living Library, & Bonnie
Ora Sherk: Past, Present, Future
Reception: August 4, 2005, 6 - 8 PM
During the month of August, Braunstein/Quay
Gallery will exhibit a systemic approach to environmental
and social transformation by Bonnie Ora Sherk. Sherk was
one of the first artists to incorporate the diverse fields
of ecological planning and urban design with performance
and installation art, winning SFMOMA‚s first SECA award
in l970, which temporarily transformed urban "dead spaces" with
trees, sod, live animals, and people. It was an early Life
Frame. Another early Life Frame that she founded and directed
from 1974-80, was Crossroads Community (the farm), an urban
farm and arts center adjacent to and incorporating the Army
Street Freeway interchange in San Francisco.
Always interested in the environment
and transformation, Sherk links and incorporates local resources
within communities
into content-rich landscapes that are integrated with community
programs and project-based learning environments.
