Shaw Biography

Richard Shaw, a master of Trompe L'oeil ceramics, exhibits a new body of figurative and two-dimensional work.

"While retaining a functional reference," states Shaw, "I break the single ceramic object into individual parts that relate to each other and create a still life that reads as an event in process."  Influenced by assemblage and the Surrealist movement Shaw's figures are recognized for their lively attitudes and jazzy postures.

In his two-dimensional work, exemplified by plates, envelopes, and sketchbooks, Shaw creates the impression of a person working out ideas through observation, exploration of the unconscious, and the necessary placement of images on these objects.

Richard Shaw is a Professor In Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley.  His work is in major museum collections throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States.
