Ursula Schneider
| Bear Stories & Paintings
Reception: June 14, 2003, 3 - 5 p.m.
"Everyone
has a bear story, and over time the story becomes larger
than the original experience," says Ursula Schneider. "During
my recent trip to Alaska I had several surprise encounters
with Grizzly bears. I realized how we carry bear stories
with us. I began to identify the metaphor of the bear with
my everyday life and the experiences that life throws at
me." Schneider's "bear story" experiences
in her current exhibition include passing through hospital
hallways while visiting an ill relative, the view from
her studio window, collecting wood fragments and sand from
Australia.
Ursula
Schneider began drawing the Petaluma, California landscape
in 1978. She developed a method of painting, with pure
pigments and water-based urethane, on panels constructed
of laminated
nylon that are suspended away from the wall by metal
brackets. Her landscape paintings explore changes through
time as
she captures the impact of light and shadow. |
