Arthur
Okamura's art results from his travels to different
locations and relates to the culture, the people, and
the circumstances that he encounters.
The
monoprints in this exhibition were created after
a visit to France and England where Okamura had the
opportunity to view the exhibition "Matisse and
Picasso" at the New Tate Gallery in London.
Soon thereafter he created a series of monoprint
portraits
of great artists, including Matisse, Picasso, and
Monet
During
this period Okamura also visited Hawaii, where
he created a self-portrait based on transforming
a digital photograph into a woodcut and also painted
landscapes of the Hawaiian Jungle.
Arthur
Okamura's work is represented in the permanent collections
of the Art Institute of Chicago, the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney
Museum
of Art.
