Reception: August 12, 2006 3-5 PM
Curator Myra Block
Kaiser, one of the founders of the
Website Fiberscene.com, curates her third exhibition with
Braunstein/Quay Gallery. Marking Boundaries focuses on
the role of fiber in contemporary society, bringing together
a diverse group of artists who explore the physical, social,
political and psychological boundaries that we all encounter.
Jane Lackey conceptualizes the ultimate
map, our DNA.
Linda Hutchins takes us to the limits of social
interaction in her hand-typed works.
Consuelo Jiminez Underwood's mixed media pieces depict the painful process of Mexican-American
border crossings.
Emily Stewart hand dyes and pieces work
that traces her steps from home to work to play.
Scott
Hove creates large knots and installations from marine
hemp rope.
Jean Cacicedo creates wall hangings that reinterpret
the border-markers on patterns before stitching.
Kay Khan layers felt, applique, embroidery and stitches to document
memory and personal narrative.
Deidre Scherer quietly reminds
us of our own mortality.
Marking Boundaries explores
the many borders that touch our lives, those that mark us
as individuals, help to locate us on this planet, define
our individual needs, and finally those that mark our last
commonality, age.
