Cork Marcheschi | Back to Basics
November 24 - December 23, 2006
Reception: December 2, 2006, 3–5 p.m.
Artist Biography
Having worked with light for the last 40 years, Cork Marcheschi has at times used computer technology to control and manipulate light to create a desired perceptual experience. Now that technology has seeped into every aspect of human life, Marcheschi finds himself drawn to low technology - daylight, starlight, flame, and the glow of Christmas lights.
In this exhibition, Marcheschi pairs light sources, neon, halogen, and incandescent, with user friendly common objects. "I care about making art glow," Marcheschi says, "in a very human way that retains the essence of what light is without having to dress it up."
Cork Marcheschi, an internationally recognized neon artist whose work appears throughout the world, has recently completed a commission for Bay Area Rapid Transit, titled Home, that is installed on the northeast corner of 16th Street and Mission in San Francisco, California. Home has a traditional childlike shape and multicolored patchwork windows that act as a beacon of light in a neighborhood known for drugs and poverty.
