Artist Biography

Robilee Frederick uses light as an analogy for memory. Her work explores the ways that reflected or refracted light creates an ephemeral quality that resonates with our fugitive sense of moments past. She draws freely from her life experiences and her travels throughout the world and her work explores a variety of textures and materials.

A recent trip to Bhutan has inspired many new creations. The commitment of the indigenous people to Buddhism and their profound acceptance of every aspect of the life-cycle has been particularly influential to Frederick's latest body of work. Seeds found in Bhutan, encased in translucent fan-like wings, become a part of her newest light pieces. These wing shapes have also emerged in recent paintings where seed circles swim in an enigmatic watery atmosphere. To Frederick, these shapes are "a symbol of rebirth and renewal."

In her 7th decade, Frederick has learned that life is a circle, and the labyrinths and circles that she has painted in the past, continue to be part of her work.
