Artist Biography

Robert Brady's next exhibition with Braunstein/Quay Gallery is an expanded view of his ongoing fascination with materials as diverse as clay, wood, and paper.  Trained in ceramics, he began working in wood in 1987, eager to explore a new medium.

His upcoming exhibition will be a multi-faceted selection of works that highlights his diverse attitude towards art-making.  He avoids a long-term, linear method and states that "diversion, circling, and new encounters" better describe his practice.  Brady simultaneously engages and embraces both figuration and abstraction while attempting to reconcile the qualities of clay and wood -- two materials that he has spent a lifetime exploring.

Raised in Nevada, Brady has been a professor of art at California State University in Sacramento since 1975.  His work is in numerous public collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Stedelijik Museum in Amsterdam, Holland, and the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.  The exhibition, Robert Brady: Sculpture 1989 – 2005, was recently organized by the Palo Alto Art Center, traveling to six venues in California and the Northeast.
