Artist Biography
Through photography, Kimberly Austin explores the relationship between the representation and construction of identity. This 12-year retrospective exhibits the myriad ways she continues to investigate the so-called normal, natural, and appropriate forms of human behavior, while confronting issues of gender, desire and pleasure. The exhibition includes alphabet blocks from Learning Normalcy, silk shrouds from Aphrodisia and Contra Natura, gum bichromate prints from How to Live and Van Dyke prints from the Adam and Edna series.
Kimberly Austin mixes her own photographic emulsions and hand paints them onto silk, muslin, and natural papers. She received her Masters of Fine Art from San Francisco State University and has had one person exhibits in Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, and across the United States. In 2004 she was awarded the James D. Phelan Award in Photography, a biennial award given through the San Francisco Foundation in recognition of artistic achievements by California-born artists.
