Kimberly Austin | Adam & Edna
Reception: September 6, 2003, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Artist Biography

California native Kimberly Austin presents her grandparents "Adam and Edna", as the case study of a woman who absolutely did not fit the typical feminine role and of a man whose gentle demeanor did not fit the mold of a typical man.

Spanning the years from 1939-1958, the randomly collected correspondences and photographs in this exhibition were painstakingly copied on to film by Austin. Then using collage techniques she mounted two copies of the same image, one printed on watercolor paper the other on vellum, onto wood panels. Working with found imagery, utilizing traditional photographic materials and developing her work by hand, Austin continues to look to the past to focus and comment on western cultural norms.
